Striving beyond retro-revivalism toward any and all sounds avant-psychedelic, Heavy Water Experiments dares originality and eclecticism. From mellow and acoustic to heavy and dark, from ethereal psych folk to thunderous stoner rock, HWE achieves an atypical confluence of mainstream and experimentation. Classic rock influences may abound, but so many media voices have never drawn comparisons to the same artists or group of artists—at least some testament to HWE’s uniqueness.
The live ensemble has varied from 3 to 5 persons, with combinations of electric/acoustic guitar, 4/8-string bass, electric piano/organ, and drums. Both male and female vocals of various timbres and styles have appeared, sometimes wordlessly, but a consistent emphasis on melody and emotion perseveres. To date, the band has toured the US, the UK (twice), Holland, and Belgium. In and around Los Angeles, the band has played a wide range of venues from Spaceland, The House of Blues, and The Viper Room to more acoustic-oriented venues like The Hotel Cafe, which culminated in being chosen as one of Amoeba Records' local picks and a more recent write-up in OC Weekly.
The band's recordings have garnered well over 100 enthusiastic reviews internationally, including a full-page color feature in Classic Rock Magazine. The current album has accumulated steady international momentum through underground radio airplay and live interviews from DJ's in the US, UK, Europe, and Australia. Tracks from the album have also appeared on popular American TV shows such as Friday Night Lights, and the band's promo poster has appeared on sets for shows like The OC and 90210. The band has also self-organized two underground music festivals in the neighboring Mojave Desert with many notable LA bands such as Crystal Antlers, Spindrift, and The Binges performing. |
